A quick report South Essex Amateur Radio Society’s club night on Tuesday the 12th April 2016
After the usual teas and coffees, the evening was formally kicked off by Dave G4UVJ, who outlined plans for the club’s upcoming Airfields On The Air event at RAF Boxted, north of Colchester, on Sunday the 24th of April
Next, the floor was handed over to Vic G6BHE, for the evening’s main talk
The topic for the evening was “A day in the life of a network engineer”, with an insight into life at Internet Service Provider Demon Internet.
Vic joined Demon in 1999 and was based at Thamesgate House, on Southend’s Victoria Avenue. As a Senior Data Engineer for the pioneering Internet Provider, he had some great stories about life behind the scenes, and some of his travels in the line of duty.
For the technically-minded, lots of discussion about JANET, the BURP protocol, CiX, and the world of early dialup Internet access.
Finally for the evening, SEARS training manager Steve 2E0UEH gave a short update on plans for the May 2016 Foundation training course.
Thanks to SEARS for an interesting talk, the chance to socialise, plus the tea and biccies.
