Is it me, or has this month just flown by? We’re less than a week away from the next Essex Skills Night night, which takes place on Monday the 15th of May 2017.
Here’s a list of what’s provisionally planned for the May 2017 Essex Skills Night:
- Contests & Logging: Dean G4WQI will be bringing along a laptop with the popular logging application N1MM, to demonstrate logging contest QSOs efficiently.
- RTTY Date Mode: Following a request in our Skills Night Survey, Richard G7OED has kindly offered to run an RTTY demo at this month’s Skills Night.
- EchoLink: Fancy giving EchoLink a try? With the Chelmsford MB7IDA gateway now back on-air, you can get talking around the world without HF or a DMR/D-Star handheld. Find out more from Jim 2E0RMI this Monday.
- Essex CW Club: Helping to promote and encourage the Morse mode, the team will be busy again this month. Stop by to find out more about this mode.
- Testing, Testing: Hopefully, Mike G4NVT will be along with his new spectrum analyser for testing antennas and handhelds, VSWR testing measuring frequency and filters. This month, he’ll be joined by Ed G8FAX. If you have anything you’d like tested, please bring it along.
- Essex Ham: A demo of “something” (any requests?). Also, Getting Started advice and leaflets, the Raspberry Pi Zero playing the latest video, details about the online Foundation training course, plus the event’s wi-fi.
- Callsign Badges & Pens: Got a new callsign recently? Tell everyone who you are with a callsign badge or pen engraved while-you-wait, courtesy of Jim 2E0JTW and Glynis 2E0CUQ
- Skills Quiz: Another set of challenging questions devised by Murray G6JYB, and presented by either Chris G0IPU or Murray… Just for fun!
Auction: New for May 2017, for the first time, there’ll be an auction, run by David M1ECC and Mike G4NVT. Thanks to Mike for supplying the following information:
After the quiz on Monday 15th, a small auction will be put on by David and Mike. Visitors are welcome to bring items on the night. Please see Mike and David on the night to discuss reserves (if any). Due to time constraints, it might not be possible to auction every item on the night, so please limit any entries to 1 or 2 items per person. A percentage of sales will go to the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society, at David M1ECC’s request. |
At the time of writing, there is one spare table, if anyone wants one! Contact Pete M0PSX
As usual, representatives from Essex Ham, CARS, the Essex Repeater Group, the Essex CW Club and Essex RAYNET will be on hand to help with questions you may have.
The above list is subject to last-minute change.
For those not able to attend, Rachel G6AMY has offered to chair Essex Ham’s Monday Night Net, from 8pm on GB3DA.

More about Skills Night
Essex Skills Nights continue to be one of the most popular gatherings of radio enthusiasts in the area. They take place at the Village Hall in Danbury, and are hosted by the CARS Training Team. The events are great for those new to the hobby keen to get some advice or ideas on the next steps. The events are informal, free to all, and everyone’s welcome – no need to be a member of any club to attend.
If you’ve been along to a Skills Night before, you’ll know what to expect – the usual mix of demonstrations, show-and-tell, construction, plus the chance to chat, ask questions and swap ideas. If you’ve not visited a Skills Night before… why not? Come along! It’s a friendly event with free tea and coffee where you can come along and learn more about the hobby. All are welcome, there’s no charge, and you don’t need to have a licence, or be a member of any club to come along.
