“Dah-dit-dah-dit Dah-dah-dit-dah”
Morse code no longer forms part of the amateur radio exams, but at Foundation-level, candidates undertake a Morse appreciation practical – Morse is an important part of radio’s history, and it’s still very active 100 years on. Tuning around the HF bands, you’ll find a lot of Morse (or CW to its friends).
If the idea of being able to decode CW, or work a mode that works when voice just can’t get through, then consider attending a Morse class in Essex.
CARS Morse Classes
The Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) runs popular weekly Morse code classes in Danbury, near Chelmsford, aimed at getting those with no Morse experience “up to speed”. There’s also a class for the more advanced CW operator.
The courses are run by Andy Kersey G0IBN, are held every Thursday evening at 7pm at the Danbury Village Hall, Danbury, near Chelmsford.
If you would like to improve, or just need encouragement to get on the air, attending the CARS Morse class is the perfect option. Instruction is also given on all aspects of CW – which include good manners on the air; how to have that CW chat; DX manners; Contesting and operating skills on the pump key and twin paddle keying.
For those looking to get some on-air experience, Andy also operates slow Morse transmissions at 5, 7 and 10 words-per-minute on 3.550-3.560kHz +/-QRM at 8:15pm every Wednesday evening.
If you want to contact Andy about his Morse classes, you’ll find contact details on the CARS website
