One of the most common questions asked about our hobby is “What is amateur radio?” This could come from a friend or family member trying to work out what the aerial farm in the garden is all about, or passers-by at the various ham radio field events that take place across the country.
To try to help answer the question, and to help bring new people into the hobby, Essex Ham produced a “What is Amateur Radio” video last year. This seven minute feature was distributed online, played at club nights in Essex, used at a couple of public-speaking events in the area, and distributed on DVD a couple of times to interested parties.
A second version was prepared last year, focusing more on the Foundation syllabus, to help people interested in starting their amateur radio journey. This has been distributed to potential Foundation candidates to give a feel for what’s involved with the practicals and course material.
New Videos
In response to some very positive feedback on these videos, we’ve produced a couple of new ones. These focus more on the social and interactive side of the hobby, and less on the learning / courses. They are also shorter. The original 7 minute version is joined by a new 6 minute, 4 minute and 2 minute version.
- A Taste of Amateur Radio (4 mins)
- Two Minute Amateur Radio Taster (2 mins)
- Introduction to Amateur Radio (6 mins)
- Getting Started in Amateur Radio (7 mins)
Share and Enjoy!
If you find these videos of interest or of use, you’re welcome to share them – Perhaps via Facebook or Twitter? If you run a website, you’re welcome to embed the clips on your site. If you’re involved with a club, organisation, training course or external organisation, and you feel that these could be of use, please share away. All we’d ask is that you don’t edit them, and that they’re only used for not-for-profit purposes to promote the hobby.
If you want to embed the videos on your site, there’s an option under the video when viewed on YouTube:
If you’re after copies in other formats or in higher resolution, please contact us as we should be able to help.
These are being made available for sharing to help to promote the hobby and to stimulate interest. Hopefully, if these are shared, it may encourage new people into the hobby, something that is much needed…
