If you’ve designed, built, constructed or assembled something radio-related in the last 12 months, here’s a quick reminder that this coming Tuesday, the 5th of August, is the annual Constructors Contest held by the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society.
Prizes are on offer for the best construction, as voted by the meeting’s attendees – you’d also be surprised at what qualifies for entry – construction from a kit, an antenna, or even something that it’s not possible to bring along – photos and video entries are also allowed.
The key rules are that the construction should ideally be radio-related and must be electrically-safe. The emphasis is on the construction of the item, whether it’s your own design, built from a kit or just copied from a magazine or website.
2013 Entries
Here’s a summary of the entries in last year’s contest, to give you a feel of what sort of things qualify:
- A Morse key fashioned from a window catch
- A multi-switched attenuator
- A portable multiband HF Mast with ground-plane
- A 2m/70cm “ground plane” for a hand-held
- A base-loading coil system for a 10-metre mast
- A frequency counter, made from a kit
- A top-band coil-loaded vertical mounted on a wind-sock pole
- A ‘Go-Pack’ for portable operation
- A robust 4:1 balun
After votes from members, prizes went to Andy G1GKN for his multiband HF mast, Patrick M0XAP for his base-loading coil system, Colin G0TRM for his window-catch Morse key, and a “Best Newcomer” award to Melvin M6BSX for his frequency counter kit.
