If you can regulate it well a linear power supply is much better imho. The main drawer back is cost.
Switch mode are cheaper to build, but can cause EMC problems.
I've built loads power supplies over the years. I will see what scrap transformers I can find. Old commercial lead acid battery chargers should do the trick.

When it comes to power supplies, are switch mode acceptable? or best to stick to linear ?
Its something I will be looking at building in the future.
