New to the hobby myself, you often find people listening and not talking so you may be suprised.
a quick test for a repeater is so long as no one is using it, key up briefly (second or so only)and when you release the key the repeater will hold the TX for a short time
if that seems to work try a call "m7bxp listening through GB3xx" a lot of hams just sit on the local repeater and listen
My suggestion would be to say "M7BXP testing access to GB---" I used to find that would often get a response, at least you know then that other folks can hear you :)
Well... I think we can say that the 2m and 70cm calling frequencies in these parts are nothing but dead air.
Never once heard a peep on them, and no response at all to calling CQ.
I am able to open up some local repeaters, but getting no responses.
Will try again tomorrow.

Just received my foundation licence yesterday.
Im going to attempt my first VHF/UHF CQs today. I'm not overly hopeful as in all my time listening, I have never once heard any traffic at all on the calling frequencies. Not a single peep.
I am also going to try and work my nearest repeater, to check I have got the programming correct on my HT.
Wish me luck... Any first time tips?
