Importing VHF/UHF from Japan (2 replies and 1 comment)
Hi,
I'm not sure whether this applies to VHF/UHF as well, but on the HF bands Japan has different (lower) maximum power levels than Region 1, so the radios for the Japanese domestic market reflect that, and apparently they cannot be modified to match Region 1 privileges. Those transceivers can probably be used in Europe, but if I wanted to buy a transceiver, given the choice I would not import a Japanese one but buy one designed for Region 1. But ultimately the choice is yours.
Also, if you buy a transceiver from Japan, shipping costs may be higher, and you may (or may not?) have to pay import duties, so that will have to be factored into any decision based on purchase price.

Hi Gorge,
Thank you for your advice.
I'm going to Japan for a vacation next month, and I want to get a souvenir for myself - a cheap ham radio sounds perfect.
I was thinking of getting a second-hand HT for satellite operations and possibly a mobile station for experimentation, but only if I can get them very cheaply.
However, thanks to your input I won't even consider getting an HF base station from Japan. I'm going to buy a new one with a warranty in the UK.
Many thanks,

I agree with George, only buy a "shack in a box" multi-band rig in Region 1. Also, if you wanted 70 MHz, 4 metres a rig sold in Japan would not have it, unlike eg IC 7100 and IC 7300 Region 1 versions.

Greetings,
I'd like to know if I can use an imported Japanese VHF/UHF transceiver in the UK.
The band plans in Japan and the UK are in the same frequency ranges. Here is the Japanese band plans: https://www.jarl.org/English/6_Band_Plan/JapaneseAmateurBandplans20200421.pdf
Yaesu and Icom make different radios for Japan, Europe, and the USA. Is there anything else that comes into play besides the bands?
