New Licence Conditions question (1 reply and 2 comments)
there is no mention of PMR etc on any license, but as a licensed amateur you are responsible to ensure your station conforms with your license conditions
e.g. you don't transmit out of band, harmonics are within the limits, bandwidth / modulation stays within limits and you keep your TX power to the limits in the license schedule (some are power limits are lower on bands hams are secondary users, some are rig power, some are ERP where you need to take antenna gain into account as well as rig output)
spectrum analysers like the TinySA are around £60 (make sure you get a genuine unit or they fail selftest when you upgrade the software), you can check harmonics and you can use low pass filters to limit harmonics
building kits can be a great learning experience, i tend to use QRP-labs.com as the instructions include description of the circuit, theory and fault finding
repurposing non ham kit is harder as you need to reverse engineer and understand how the device works, some can just be reprogrammed, others will require electronic modification (there may be online guides or kits with all the parts and instructions), but if you do the mods you need to confirm it conforms

Yes Foundation can now modify and use PMR and indeed any other non-amateur equipment so long as it can be made to operate in an amateur band and the power level can be adjusted to give the permitted 25 watts at the antenna. The use of PMR rigs by Foundation had been permitted since 2006 if they bought the modified rig from a commercial supplier now they can do their own modification. As has been the case since 2002 for Foundation transmitter kits, no compliance testing is required for modified PMR equipment
Thanks both.

Have examined all the statements I can find online and not managed to find a definitive answer.
Foundation holders may now construct their own equipment, but where do they stand in terms of using equipment not specifically designed for amateur operation, ex PMR or military kit for example?
