Programming Baofeng GT-5R using CHIRP (2 replies and 2 comments)
yes, chirp is the correct software to program the baofengs
where are you based as essex ham has members all over the UK
i have attached a image of my channel list from y Baofeng UV5r
it should give you an idea of what to put where,
the frequency is the the repeater input frequency,
then you have a name which is displayed on the LCD of the baofeng,
you have the tone mode and the access tone for the repeater (if they are required)
then you have the mode (repeaters tend to be NFM / narrow FM) normal calling and FM simplex frquencies tend to be FM
for repeaters you then need the offset (the difference between the input and output frequency of the repeater)
finally comments
unless you are close to a repeater you will likely need an external antenna to make contacts with the built in antenna on a baofeng / any handheld
as to the other radio you have it should be ok for normal simplex comms but won't be able to work via repeater

sorry the frequency is the repeater output frequency, NOT the input frequency i said above
Thanks for the information - I was getting confused by all the extra columns in CHIRP - I will have a go at programming the GT-5R based on my local repeaters (Horsham) - I have rigged up a temporary external antenna - a magnetic 1/4 wave ground plane stuck on a metal baking tray sitting on a velux window....
I'm not sure whether any repeaters in the UK still use a 1750 Hz tone burst. CTCSS has been mandatory for the last 20 years or so, although there may still be a few legacy systems around that use tone burst. I know some repeaters in Europe still use it.

I am new to the hobby, I have bought a Baofeng GT-5R as my first handheld - I have seen posts on programming the unit, but none of them mention using CHIRP software, and the options I can see when I download the default channel info from the radio look nothing like what I am getting.... I am trying to programme it for local repeaters.
Another related question - I also have a "vintage" 2m mobile unit (Standard C8800) from the eighties. It can't send CTCSS but it can send a 1750Hz toneburst - will this still "wake up" a repeater, or is it obselete from a repeater perspective ?
Thanks,
Tim
