replacement antenna for Baofeng UV-5R (3 replies)
Hi Peter,
For base use, the best option is a rooftop colinear, mounted as high as possible. Next option would be a loft antenna. You could consider a home-made Slim Jim which can be hung out, or near, a window.
There’s some potentially useful info here: https://www.essexham.co.uk/listening-in-to-amateur-radio;
Pete
Thanks Pete
got a Retevis RHD771 Walkie Talkie Antenna SMA-F coming tomorrow from amazon for mobile use, and still looking at moonraker at SQBM100P MkII Dual Band 2/70 Vertical (SO239) for on the house
i did go up the see front the other might, i could hear GB3DA but couldn't reach it, hopefully i bigger antenna i may be able to reach it and join in monday night nets :)
i got the SQBM100P MkII Dual Band 2/70 Vertical (SO239) and mounted it on the washing line pole temporary while i sort things out
all i can say is night and day for range instead of 5-10 miles i can now hear gb3da from far side of sheppey and successfully made contacts with maidstone and medway
next thing is to mount on house and get it another 3-5mtr higher and see how that affects range

a friend of mine bought me a UV-5R for passing my foundation, so i had a 2mtr/70cm ability alongside my HF rig, managed to sort it out with chirp, so have the channels just about sorted
the other comments i see about these handhelds is the antenna is not the best,
has anyone got any recommendations for a better antenna for handheld use or for a base unit use so i can leave it sat in the charger set to just scan the channels i have programmed
if you have any recommendations how much better in the antenna over the stock antenna?
