RFI from power line Ethernet adapter. (1 reply and 2 comments)
powerline ethernet is very noisy on HF, so generally avoided like the plague by amateurs
powerline ethernet effectively turns yours house wiring into a massive untuned antenna
clamp on ferrites being an RF choke will likely prevent the powerline ethernet working after them so not a good idea if you want to use beyond the ferrite
best is to run an outdoor rated cat 5e cable down the garden
remember the 100m run limit on ethernet cable between network switch and device

It's only about a foot section of mains cable that goes through an external wall that I need to use powerlines for. After that I go into cat5. As long as the ferrite chokes will do a good job of blocking the RFI then I can use them to isolate the rest of the mains.
This will have to do until I can get something better installed
Ps. Thank you for your help (I pressed send there without meaning to)

I have been trying to run an Ethernet cable to the bottom of my garden for some time.
I have a wired network in the house with an rj45 and mains socket in a room that overlooks the garden.
There is an external mains socket which is on the same circuit as the internal plug so I have connected a power line adapters to give me a network connection through the plug and into a weather proof box on the outside. From there I run a length of Ethernet cable down the garden. Until such time as I can get an external rj45 socket fitted this will have to do.
Unfortunately I also have a mains extension on the same plug that runs down the length of the garden fence that's pretty much permanently on.
I'm aware from some reading up that this extension in now radiating RFI at about 50 MHz because of the power line.
What's the best way to prevent this? Will a clamp on ferrite core do it or do I need something else?
(I have reposted this twice but it keeps saying "no replies" not sure why?)
