Using for Airsofting (1 reply and 1 comment)
I’m quite sure you wouldn’t be legal to transmit on any of the amateur radio bands even with a licence, passing information to each other using codes etc isn’t allowed.
I understand many airsoft/paintball hobbies use the baofengs and other Chinese HT’s for this purpose on PMR frequencies but these HT’s are illegal for PMR as they tx 3w to 10watts PMR is only allowed 0.5 of a watt, which is ample for your needs. The problem with using them on any frequency outside of this you could easily be transmitting over businesses, beacons, worst of all air bands & ground control endangering lives.
In short no it’s illegal (though I am not ofcom). Someone may tell you different but that’s my understanding. Don’t let it prevent you from gaining a licence it’s a great pastime.
or grab yourself a business license between your pals

Thank you Richard I appreciate your reply. Will continue to get a licence and look at a business licence too.
Thank you again

Hi,
Im just about to book in my exam for foundation and when passed am currently just wanting to use better radios (uv-5r) for Airsofting.
Am I right that I would scan for a channel between144.0 and 146.0 which is not in use and then use that frequency for the day with my team mates albeit that they too are holding a valid foundation or higher license.
Or do I just use the UHF 446mhz as I guess they can also transmit and receive on? assuming that PMR 446 is the same as UHF 446
Apologies if this is has been asked before and this is still quite new to me.
Many Thanks
Dan
