What a Balun (2 replies and 1 comment)
In basic terms... The "Bal" stands for "Balanced" and the "Un" stands for Unbalanced. They are used to connect "unbalanced" cable (like co-ax cable) to a "balanced" antenna (like a dipole)
They are NOT an alternative to a VSWR meter. The meter is used to measure how much power is being transmitted, and how much is being sent back to the transmitter. If a meter shows a high VSWR, there is a mismatch between transmitter and antenna.
Does that help?
Pete
Ahoy @Pete M0PSX yeah I'm aware of the definition of the word Balun. But my heartie, what does it mean to have a unbalanced coax to a balanced dipole. Are we talking about balancing the voltage the amps or insuring the impedance is the same from the transmitter to the antenna?
II know like a ferrite choke it can block RF travelling down he outside of the coax outer braid. But I don't understand what it's main function is. In fact I know a lot of people who believe Balun is a waste of time.
If you're looking to learn more about how BalUns work, try the following:

What's a Balun in layman's terms, what's there ain purpose/function and are they an alternative to use a voltage standing wave ratio metre?
