If you have an interest in helping to bring the new generation of amateurs into the hobby, consider helping out with your local amateur radio club as a tutor.
There are several ways to help:
- As a tutor – teaching in a classroom or online
- As a helper on a course – helping with hands-on activities, supporting the candidates, and making the tea
- As a Registered Assessor – This allows you to complete exam paperwork. Apply via the RSGB (two referees requires)
- As an exam secretary – Organising exams
- As an invigilator – Helping to ensure that exams are run correctly
Trainers are volunteers, helping to bring new people into the hobby, and it’s a great way for amateurs to “give something back”.
Note that your club may require you to complete a DBS check if working with youngsters or vulnerable adults.

Your club doesn’t offer training?
You can become an independent tutor… or suggest that your local club starts training. It doesn’t have to run a full course – just provide support for training and exams. We offer a full package of training material, videos and a complete online Foundation course, designed to help clubs offer training without the headache of teaching and/or preparing content.
