Always keen to promote Amateur Radio in Essex, Pete from Essex Ham was given the opportunity to join presenter Scott Ross on Phoenix FM in Brentwood to discuss the hobby.
The interview was broadcast from studios based at The Brentwood Centre at 2:30pm on Thursday the 12th of July 2012, as part of the Drivetime show.
Subjects discussed included how to get into the hobby, requirements for passing the exam and getting the licence, and a summary of some of the more unusual things that you can do on-air with a license. Pete also discusses QSL cards, DXpeditions, low-power DX, field days and the Olympic Torch.
Pete highlighted that the hobby is much easier to get involved with than before. A Foundation course costs around £50, including the training book and exam fees. There’s no longer a morse test, and you don’t have to build your own equipment, as handheld radios such as the Baofeng UV-3R cost from £25.
