This coming Monday, the 17th of August, will be the next Skills Night, hosted by the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society Training Team.
If you’ve been along to a Skills Night before, you’ll know what to expect – a good mix of show-and-tell, demonstrations, construction, plus the chance to chat, ask questions, and swap ideas. If you’ve not visited a Skills Night before… why not? Come along on, all are welcome, there’s no charge, and you don’t need to be a member of CARS to come along.
Here’s what’s in store for the August 2015 Skills Night:
- Construction: Peter M0PSD and Chris 2E0CUU will be there to help you make your first 2m or 70cm Slim Jim antenna or 2 metre dipole. Also on offer – patch lead construction, plus help, advice and access to tools and soldering irons. Come along and get making.
- Data Modes: Charlie M0PZT will be running a live HF station demonstrating one or two of the more popular data modes (such as PSK31, RTTY or JT65). If you want to get started with data, or see a live demo, this month’s Skills is the perfect chance. Charlie M0PZT is also the creator of EssexPSK, a free program written for us to help get you started with PSK31
- .Portable Antennas: Peter G0DZB will be bringing along a selection of antennas and accessories to help those looking to get started with HF in the field
- Amateur Satellites: Want to get started with amateur radio satellites or working the ISS? Find out about tracking software, antennas and weather satellites from Steve M0SHQ
- Radio Programming: Charlie M0PZT will be available to set up your handheld – never an easy task! Baofengs & Yaesus are his speciality. Rigs such as the Yaesu, FT-817, FT-857 and FT-897 can also be programmed. Please bring along the radio’s power cable
- Essex CW Club: Meet the Morse team and learn more about their mode of choice. Andy G0IBN will be on hand for beginners – The next round of CW training courses start in September!
- Essex Ham: In response to lots of questions recently, we’ll be demonstrating our new Foundation Online training course, as well as handing out Getting Started Guides and providing the event’s free wi-fi
- The Skills Quiz: Test your radio knowledge with quizmaster Clive G1EUC – just for fun
Representatives from CARS, Essex RAYNET, the Essex Repeater Group, the Essex CW Club and Essex Ham will be on hand to help with questions.

Each Skills Night is different, and the events always get a good mix of attendees, some travelling from outside the Essex area to chat and mingle. Suggestions for topics are very welcome, and if you fancy putting on a show-and-tell as a future event, let one of the CARS training team know.
The Skills Night is an initiative from the CARS Training Team, and is supported by Essex Ham. The Skills Night is free to attend, with refreshments provided. The event is open to all regardless of licence level and club affiliation – If you know someone interested in coming along – please pass this message along.
