Monday the 16th of October 2017 was the second in an experimental format proposed and promoted by the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society. This experimental format sees the event move from the original structured training and skills development format, to a social and networking event driven by the attendees.
On offer for the October 2017 evening was:
- CARS Construction – Chris G0IPU and Andy G7TKK assembling and testing a radio construction project coupled with an amplifier
- RFSpace SDR-IQ – Murray G6JYB gave the CARS RFSpace SDR-IQ an airing
- Essex CW Club – Dean G4WQI demonstrating the mode ahead of the upcoming CW bootcamp
- Essex Ham – Getting Started Guides, an SDR demo, Foundation Online, plus the team’s latest video
On the Essex Ham stand, we ran a £10 SDR dongle listening to broadcast radio. Laura M6LHT had her Android tablet with a dongle, and was able to get it set up and tune into Rachel G6AMY running Essex Ham’s net.
With Rachel in the chair for the net, Pete M0PSX showed some of the attendees how the behind-the-scenes live streaming and audio recording system works, by logging in remotely to his shack. Pete also joined the net to say “hi” from the attendees at Skills.
Nice to see Derek from SOSLUG, the Southend Linux Group, bringing along an SDR dongle in the hopes that we might be able to get it going. With Linux skills in short supply, no joy, but good to catch up. Essex Ham has attended various SOSLUG events, including various Southend Raspberry Jam events.

One of the bits of feedback received at the CARS AGM was that Murray’s Quiz was missing from the September event. This month, the quiz was back, with some tricky questions from Quizmaster Murray.
The last in the run of three experimental evenings s currently set for the 20th of November.
