The Thames ARG had its second club night last night, Friday the 2nd of November 2012.
The meeting was at the new club’s home, the Jubilee Hall, at the back of Canvey Island’s Waterside Farm. After last month’s “meet and greet”, the second meeting of the newest club in Essex was an opportunity to welcome new members, and to find out from the members where everyone’s interests lie, and what should be added to the group’s 2013 agenda.
Around twenty-five guests and members attended, and discussion topics included JOTA, working the ISS, the possibility of table sales, HF contests and the various different nodes that members like to operate.
The evening’s talk was on the subject of aircraft maintenance, by the group’s chairman Mike Byrne M0MMB. Mike is a licensed airframe and powerplant engineer with over 23 years of experience in aircraft engineer. He also gained a private pilot’s in 1994. Mike currently works for British Airways at Heathrow on the nightshift ensuring that when early morning flights resume, the aircraft are ready to fly. Mike’s presentation included a summary of the physics that keeps planes in the air, the type of maintenance that’s needed, and some behind-the-scenes shots. His presentation included lots of photos of the outside and inside of today’s modern liners, shots from inside the engines and fuel tanks, and a video of the evacuation chutes deploying.
The next club meeting, on Friday the 14th of December, covers digital modes such as PSK31, WSPR, APRS, Packet and SSTV.
